Research - Biomedical Engineering

The Department of Biomedical Engineering's scientists are involved in cutting-edge research in biomechanics, biomaterials, bioinstrumentation, molecular biomedical engineering, tissue engineering, medical imaging, and biomedical modeling. One example is a team of researchers from Stony Brook who have partnered with scientists from Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory to develop a method for imaging a biomarker of neural stem and progenitor cells in the human brain, which may lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and other disorders of the central nervous system. In addition, Stony Brook biomedical engineering researchers are part of the AFIRM study, which is developing advanced treatment options for severely wounded servicemen and women.
